Melbourne and The Great Ocean Road

Places: Melbourne – Apollo Bay – Port Fairy

The greatly anticipated trip to Melbourne had finally arrived! We travelled along Mornington Pennisula, through Brighton and on to the bright lights of the city. Oh, and at this stage we were experiencing a very nice 30 degree temperature .

We thought it was a great idea to stay in the centre, but owing to our ‘little camper’ this wasn’t really an option. So for the same price as a campsite we booked into an airbnb apartment in what we thought was the centre of town. It in fact turned out to be around 40 minutes north by tram. Making it a bit pointless! The airbnb itself was a new experience… Stepping through the front door was like a time portal to the 1970s with swirly carpets, cushions as sofas and a pink bathroom suite. We’ll leave the owner up to your imagination but we will say we were impressed with his painted toenails! We lasted two nights without our beloved home on wheels and then decided to check into a campsite 30 mins outside of Melbourne for the rest of our stay.

Melbourne certainly lived up to it’s hype and was the coolest city we’ve ever visited! We felt like we’d fallen into a European city full of culture, Art Deco buildings, hidden quirks and bustling lane ways. After 5 days here we didn’t want to leave! Nevertheless The Great Ocean Road was awaiting us!

We knew the famous road was fast approaching as the petrol prices started creeping up and the GoPro was stuck to the dashboard set to take a photo every 2 seconds (a little OTT..?). The drive was spectacular and certainly one of the highlights of our trip so far. The 243kms were not ones to rush due to the incredible lookouts on each bend. The photos below really don’t do the coastal scenery justice!

Great photos of Melbourne – keep them coming! The UK is moving to winter so seeing the nice weather you are having makes us feel warm too. Little van looks good – who is doing the driving.
